Current Research Projects:
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases: Developing a Diabetes Numeracy Intervention for American Indians/Alaska Natives (2013-2016, Principal Investigator). This project will result in development and pilot testing of a classroom-based curriculum designed to improve diabetes-related numeracy skills among American Indians and Alaska Natives with diabetes.
Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases: Numeracy Intervention to Improve Diabetes
Self-Management (2011-2016, Principal Investigator of a pilot project supported
by the NIH-funded Center for American Indian and Alaska Native Diabetes
Translational Research). The objective of this pilot project is to develop a computerized intervention to
teach Native patients the mathematical skills needed for successful
self-management of diabetes.
for Healthcare Research and Quality: Making Patient Navigation and
Understanding Easier: Developing Quality Improvement Measures (2015-2017, Project Director). This
project will result in identification and preliminary evaluation of quality
measures designed to help health care organizations assess health
literacy-related features of their environments and monitor the impact of
quality improvement efforts aimed at increasing support for patients with
limited health literacy.
Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research: Center for Native Oral Health
Research (2008-2015, Co-Investigator). This Center conducts research
to develop effective behavioral strategies for reducing the high burden of
dental disease in Native communities, emphasizing reduction of oral health
problems in early childhood.
