The main focus of the Rocky Mountain Region Colorado School of Public Health Case Competition is to help public health students across varied disciplines gain experience in working in collaborative teams to design creative and innovative solutions to real-world health problems. This year will focus on the state of Colorado’s immunization and vaccination programs and what can be done relating to this topic to improve Colorado’s overall wellbeing.
This event will be the kick-off event of CSPH’s participation in National Public Health Week in April, 2014. The teams will be given a case on Thursday April 3rd at 3 p.m. and will have until the Friday April 4th at 3 p.m. to research and prepare a case solution. At 8 a.m., April 4th, each team will have the option to meet with a faculty or community mentor for one hour. This provides an opportunity for students to gain an outside opinion on the direction they have taken for their solution. However, mentors are not there to alter student’s solutions, or be a major contributor to the resolution.
On April 4th, at 3 p.m., teams will present their solution and recommendations in front of a panel of 7 judges, (the CSPH Dean, 2 professors, and 2-4 community professionals) colleagues, and other audience members. Then, after the presentation, a social event at 6pm with appetizers will be held for the participants and any community members that wish to attend.
Faculty — we need your help…
This competition needs faculty mentorship, judging, and financial support for scholarships for the winning team as well as the sustainability of this event.
Role of a Mentor
We are looking for professors to provide an hour of mentorship to each of our teams. During this hour, the mentor will help the teams (1) consolidate the case solution, (2) help prepare team for the presentation, and (3) provide all around feedback on proposed solution and case.
Provide Financial Support for the Event and Scholarships
As a newly established event, there is opportunity to provide base funding for this year and support for future competitions, as it is a goal of the committee to make this an annual event at ColoradoSPH.
Additionally, the committee would like to provide scholarships for the winning team based on availability of funding.
