The IITs are well known, nationally and internationally, as the foremost institutes of higher technological education and research in India. Beginning with a technology focus in 1959, IIT-M has since developed highly reputed MS and PhD programs in Humanities, Social Sciences, and Management Studies. Last year, a Master’s degree program in Developmental Studies was developed. The proposed joint IGERT activity at IIT-M dovetails with the Indian Government’s National Urban Renewal Mission, with proposed expenditure of US $ 1.3 Billion. Link to website

Community Outreach, Translation Support, Local Assistance with Surveys: In previous work in Chennai, India, Dr. Ramesh has provided the UC Denver team with translation services and local personnel to conduct surveys and interviews in the urban and peri-urban areas around Chennai, where English may not always be an option. Similar collaborations are planned as part of this IGERT project.
