Research Track

Discovery (basic research)

This area emphasizes traditional research opportunities with a focus on scientific discovery. Work will involve primarily lab-based bench-top research and/or computer simulations. The approach will be hypothesis-driven, with expectations for academic productivity similar to most Ph.D. programs in basic sciences and engineering, i.e., dissemination of research work through peer-reviewed outlets, ability to formulate and defend research approaches, etc. This track is most applicable to students interested in pursuing research careers in academia or industry. Research opportunities under this track abound at UCD on both the Anschutz Medical Campus and the Downtown Campus. Likewise, a number of possible research opportunities are available under this track with affiliate faculty on the UC-Boulder campus.

MS degree in Bioengineering (2 year program, 30 credit hours total)

Year 1: Bioengineering Core (18 credit hours) at the Anschutz Medical Campus

Year 2: Choose Electives for the following Tracks:

  • Biomedical Device Design and Entrepreneurship, with internships at local biomedical device companies or in clinical programs
  • Clinical Imaging, with internships at clinical imaging laboratories at University of Colorado Hospital and The Children's Hospital
  • Research with opportunities to apply engineering to solve problems at multiple clinical and biomedical laboratories on the Anschutz Medical Campus

All students in Bioengineering take the Bioengineering Core Courses. This intensive curriculum is designed to give all students a strong foundation in both engineering and biological principles.
