Research in this area is directed towards development of models and metrics for sustainability assessment of complex systems such as techno-economic and socio-economic systems. Metrics being developed include environmental life-cycle assessment (LCA), exergy analysis, ecological footprint and information theory. These metrics in conjunction with predictive simulation tools - process simulators (technological systems) and agent-based models (socio-economic systems) - are being utilized for holistic sustainability assessment. Current work includes sustainability assessment of waste-to-energy systems, urban agriculture systems, and biofuel systems.
