Graduate Certificate Programs

Certificate programs are a great way to decide if the full degree program is for you or to supplement knowledge needed in the professional work environment. The College of Engineering and Applied Science offers two graduate certificates that can be taken while enrolled in a master’s degree program or as a nondegree student. The two certificates offered are:

  • Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Urban Infrastructure

To earn a graduate certificate in geographic information systems (GIS), students must take four of the core GIS classes; any prerequisites for those individual classes are also required. Students must also have already earned a baccalaureate degree. The core classes include:

  • CVEN 5381: Introduction to GIS
  • CVEN 5382: GIS Data Development
  • CVEN 5383: GIS Analysis
  • CVEN 5384: GIS Management
  • CVEN 5385: GIS Relational Databases
  • CVEN 5386: GIS Laboratory (two or more versions may be available)
  • CVEN 5387: Advanced Remote Sensing
  • CVEN 5960: GIS Project

This certificate is awarded by the College of Engineering and Applied Science. Students may earn this certificate without formal admission to a Master’s degree program in engineering if they take these classes as a nondegree student. All course prerequisites will still apply.

The certificate in sustainable urban infrastructure is for students and working professionals who seek an interdisciplinary curriculum in the broad field of sustainable infrastructure to address complex water, energy, built environment and transportation challenges using engineering and social science strategies.

The certificate program can be taken in conjunction with a degree program or independently from formal graduation and is open to any enrolled or nondegree student. Those wishing to obtain the certificate in sustainable urban infrastructure are required to complete four courses. Individuals with degrees in a range of disciplines (science, engineering, finance, accounting, urban planning, etc.) would be eligible to take these classes and receive the certificate. Upon deciding to enroll in the UC Denver sustainable infrastructure certificate program, students are asked to register with the sustainable urban infrastructure program coordinator by completing a short form. Upon completion of the requirements of the program, students will receive their certificate.

The four courses students are asked to complete are:

Introduction to Sustainable Urban Infrastructure

This course focuses on developing uniform vocabulary on sustainable infrastructure across science and technology, architecture and planning, public policy and health and behavioral sciences. Students learn concepts, principles/pathways and evaluation techniques for promoting the diffusion of sustainable urban infrastructures.

Defining and Measuring Sustainability

This is a unique cross-disciplinary course that teaches students community engagement strategies to define sustainability goals. Life-cycle assessment and material flow analysis tools are used to measure environmental sustainability benchmarks. Public engagement techniques such as focus groups and surveys are taught. Fieldwork applies both tools to cities in Colorado.

Theories of Sustainable Infrastructure Management

This class will explore various theories and frameworks used in engineering, planning, public affairs and social sciences for understanding and implementing sustainability as it relates to urban infrastructure.

Sector Specific Elective

The fourth and final course in the certificate program is sector specific elective that must be related to the topic of sustainable infrastructure. Students should discuss the selection of this course with the IGERT program director and program coordinator. This course is meant to enhance the students’ knowledge of sustainable infrastructure Example courses would include: sustainable urban water systems, sustainable energy systems development, energy conversion, etc.
