The First Annual MH/SS Symposium - April 8 and 9, 2011
Friday evening, April 8th, 2011, keynote speaker, Dr. Phillip K. Tompkins, the author of articles published in such journals as The James Joyce Quarterly, Esquire, The Quarterly Journal Of Speech, Philosophy And Rhetoric, and Communication Monographs spoke on the subject of homeless people, especially as it exists in Denver. For over ten years Dr. Tompkins has served as a volunteer at the St. Francis Center, a homeless shelter in Denver, Colorado. Active among non-profit organizations dedicated to helping the homeless and indigent people of Colorado, Dr. Tompkins recently published Who is my neighbor? Communicating and organizing to end homelessness. Dr. Tompkins lectures frequently at universities and organizations across the United States.

 On Saturday, April 9th, a series of professional development seminars for current students was held at Auraria Campus. The goal was to present students with both advice and strategies for taking your masters work into the public arena via community engagement. Discussion leaders discussed issues such as networking, intellectual entrepreneurship, non-profit work, and moving on to professional degrees or PhDs was discussed in a series of sessions.
