Funding Opportunities & Scholarships

The world is in great need of philosophy. The world is in great need of philosophers. We know this. The problem is that the world outside of philosophy apparently doesn't know this.

The Department of Philosophy will fund and administer up to 1 scholarship each academic year for undergraduate students at the CU Denver. Recipients will receive $1,000

           Any student currently declared as a:

·         ​CU Denver philosophy major​

·         Philosophy minor

·         Ethics minor

·         or any other CU Denver student currently enrolled in at least his/her third course and in philosophy at CU Denver.

Students must have completed a minimum of 15 credit hours at CU Denver.​

Preferences

·         Currently declared as a CU Denver philosophy major, philosophy minor, ethics minor

·         Have a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.25 or higher

·         Are enrolled for at least six credit hours during the current semester

Application

 

To pick up an application please stop by our office in Plaza Building, Suite M108.  You can also download the application from our site.

 

To apply students must submit the application along with a


·         A current CU Denver unofficial transcript.

·         A typed (double-spaced) 500-700 word essay explaining the impact philosophy has had, does have, or will have upon your life and the lives of others outside of your academic studies. Your essay will be blind reviewed. Focus your essay on one of the following three areas: 

A.) Ethics in Action

B.) Philosophy in Social Action

C.) Impact of Philosophy in Everyday Life.

 

Applications are due on or before the 14th of April at 5:00 p.m.  Decisions will be made by May 15th.

The Department of Philosophy has received the generous support of Karen and Tony Hinkel to fund up to 3 scholarships each academic year for undergraduate students at the University of Colorado Denver. Recipients will receive $400 to support their completion of an ethics class in philosophy. 

 

Purpose

Encourage students to take an ethics course and to consider pursuing an ethics certificate and/or pursuing a major or minor in philosophy.

Timeline

Decisions will be made by the end of October for Spring semester and by the end of May for Fall semester.  The Department of Philosophy reserves the right not to award a scholarship for any given semester should the evaluating committee judge that no applications merit it.   

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Recipients must be enrolled as students at UC Denver during the award period
  • Eligible students must have taken at least one PHIL ethics course (introductory or otherwise) that could count toward an Ethics Certificate or the Ethics Minor.
  • Awards are only available for Fall or Spring semester. 
  • Scholarship recipients must be enrolled in the ethics course. The award can be applied to either Lower or Upper division ethics courses.
  • Eligible students must have at least a CU Denver 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
