Bio

I sustain a long-term interest in the history and ramifications of the concept of genius. That is one of the themes of my book on Nietzsche, Young Nietzsche, Becoming a Genius. It also appears in my essay on filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.

Currently I am working on a book about early theories of popular sovereignty, including chapters on 17th century thinkers, including John Locke.

Formerly I worked in teaching effectiveness at UCD. I still give faculty development workshops in other venues, including Boot Camp for Profs.

Courses Taught

I teach several courses in modern European history with an emphasis on intellectual history. Modernity, the Enlightenment, and reactions to both figure largely in these courses. They reflect long-term research interests of mine. I also teach courses on ancient Greek history and contemporary world history and globalization.
