Honors in Anthropology

Honors

If you qualify, we strongly urge you to pursue honors in anthropology. An honors designation celebrates your high level of achievement in both the discipline and your entire undergraduate program. It can be especially helpful to you if you hope to compete for admission to a highly selective graduate program.

In addition to meeting regular major requirements, our honors program requires that you submit an honors thesis. The thesis is written in conjunction with a department faculty, usually in your last year in residence, and is completed in the context of an independent study. The honors thesis is basically a long term paper, written on a topic chosen in conjunction with your faculty advisor. The honors thesis may, but is not required to be based on independent fieldwork.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DEPARTMENTAL HONORS

Students wishing to graduate with departmental honors in anthropology must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 with a 3.7 minimum GPA in anthropology for cum laude (3.8 for magna cum laude and 3.9 for suma cum laude), as well as prepare an honors thesis of high quality. Students must also take ANTH 4810, Integrating Anthropology.

All students wishing to compete for honors MUST complete the Honors Application. This will insure that we know of your intentions, and also will help us help you get started on your honor's thesis.
