FREN 1001: French Language 1 - 4 credits, hybrid format
This is the introductory course in French language skills, in which basic grammatical structures are introduced, together with elementary vocabulary and cultural items that will allow students to carry on simple conversations in French. No previous study of French is required. The class meets twice weekly for 1 hour 20 minutes with an additional 40 minutes of online activities per week.
FREN 1002: French Language 2 - 4 credits, hybrid format
This is the second semester of elementary French language skills, the continuation of French Language 1 (FREN 1001). More complex grammatical structures are introduced together with appropriate vocabulary and cultural and literary readings that will allow students to carry on more complex conversations. The class meets twice weekly for 1 hour 20 minutes with an additional 40 minutes of online activities per week. Students who have taken one semester of beginning French at the college level (FREN 1010 at UCD or its equivalent elsewhere) or one year of high-school level French should sign up for this course. Successful completion of FREN 1002 fulfills the 2 semester CLAS foreign language requirement.
FREN 1001 and 1002 are highly interactive courses in both the classroom and online settings. Class time is spent practicing communication skills (speaking and listening), and learning good pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary so that you will be able to understand and be understood by native speakers in basic conversational situations. Work on oral communication continues online in groups that create and record oral presentations to share with the class. Your cultural awareness of the Francophone world is expanded through online video clips and listening activities and discussion in class. Reading and writing are practiced online, to round out the basic skills essential to your becoming proficient in a second language.
Beginning in Spring 2015, we will offer FREN 2003 (French Language 3), a 3 credit course that completes the introduction of elementary language skills and brings students to the intermediate level of proficiency. The same textbook and online program will be used throughout French Language 1, 2 and 3. In fall 2015, we will complete the sequence with FREN 2004 (You will learn skills enabling you to understand and be understood by native speakers in basic conversational situations.), a 3 credit course that will review elementary and intermediate language skills, include short literary and cultural readings, and prepare students to continue their French studies at the upper-division level. Completion of FREN 2004 satisfies the 4 semester foreign language requirement for INST majors.
