Information about Ethnic Studies for Donors

Our mission is to provide students with a rigorous and disciplined examination of historically underrepresented racial groups in the United States. Ethnic Studies engages in the comparative study of the social construction of race in the United States, with a focus on the histories of African Americans, American Indians, Asian Americans and Hispanic Americans. Ethnic Studies situates these core groups within national and transnational contexts. Research on these specific core groups lays the foundations for the educational, research and community service focus of Ethnic Studies.

Our values seek to offer students an education of excellence and provide all students with a widening range of curricular opportunities. Our department works to expand the multicultural content to students. Department of Ethnic Studies students are fully engaged in their education, identity ambitious individual goals and work independently on their progress.

Department of Ethnic Studies students receive close personal attention from faculty and take individual responsibilities for a rigorous academic program. Our students are challenged to excel both inside and outside the classroom. Graduates of the Ethnic Studies program work in such areas as local, state and federal governments, advertising, human resources/relations, health and health care services, insurance, museums and the arts, retail, social service agencies, K-12 and higher education, law enforcement, and publishing.

Ethnic Studies is currently seeking sources of private funding to support the following initiatives:

  • Broaden curriculum to further develop student scholars while complementing identified research signatures/niches.
  • Research themes — urban communities; health disparities; race and ethnic social issues.
  • Conduct research that responds to the community we serve.
  • Provide scholarships and internships for students.
