Composing a Thesis

Effective Revision
Presenter: Sarah Csanyi
This workshop teaches participants how to use revision techniques effectively. Unlike editing, where the writer merely fixes surface errors, revision involves seeing the work in a new light. In this workshop we will explore how to revise a piece, seeing it again in a new way. The first part of the workshop will focus on global revision; the second half will explore paragraph and sentence-level revision.

Citation and Documentation: APA & MLA

Writing a Curriculum Vitae (C.V.)
Presenter: Justin Bain, Writing Center Director
This workshop provides an overview of creating a Curriculum Vitae: a specialized academic resume. Designed for both those who are new to CVs and those who are simply interested in revising their current CVs, the workshop provides a basic template for all CVs as well as optional sections and ideas for non-traditional CVs (hybrids, 1-pagers, etc.). We will discuss who needs a CV and why, as well as what goes in a CV; we will also examine a variety of professional samples. Time will be allotted to look at drafts of your own CV.

Writing a Literature Review

In this workshop, participants will be shown the basics of crafting an effective literature review. The workshop will cover methods of approaching research, analyzing information, grouping sources, finding common themes and contentions, and expressing the findings in a clear and direct way.

English Grammar & Mechanics

This workshop will address the most common errors consultants encounter in clients' writing. It will cover basic usage of commas, semicolons, colons, and dashes; how to write complete sentences and ensure parallel structure; how to avoid subject verb disagreement; the function of prepositional phrases; and using the known-new contract.

Personal Statements & Letters of Intent
Presenter: Caitrin Blake
This workshop will define the subtle differences between personal statements, directed application essays, and letters of intent. It will also discuss what should and should not be included in each, common mistakes, and addressing academic transgressions. The workshop will culminate with a few directed writing and brainstorming exercises in order to get participants thinking of ways to begin the essay and topics they can cover.

Effective Resumes/Cover Letters

In this workshop, participants will learn how to write a professional resume and cover letter. The workshop will discuss how the two documents should complement one other, what information belongs in each section, and how to tailor these documents to specific positions using keywords. Formatting and organization will also discussed. Time will be allotted for questions and individual work on participants' resumes/cover letters.

Writing Effective Grant Proposals

Timed Writing Prep
Presenter: Caitrin Blake
This workshop is designed for participants who are
preparing to take timed writing exams. This workshop will cover both
in-class times writing exams and formal timed writing exams such as the
GRE and LSAT. Participants will learn and practice strategies for
effectively reading and responding to timed writing prompts. Time will
also be devoted to discussing time management and electronic scoring
systems.
