Piano Audition Information

Your steps to success

Piano Strings in a Steinway

1. Prepared pieces - prepare two musical pieces based on the following requirements:

      • Two contrasting styles from the following genres: jazz, Latin, pop/rock or classical
      • One piece should be slow, lyric, and demonstrate good tone, expression
      • The other piece should be fast, show your technical ability.

In addition and as an option, students may perform an original composition. This will be accepted as part of the audition repertoire. However, the composition may not serve as a substitution for one of the two required contrasting style pieces.

2. Sight Reading

Sight reading will be assessed during the audition using two methods:

      • Read an example that is about sixteen measures in length. Examples will be extracted from intermediate piano scores.
      • Interpret a lead sheet with left-hand chords from the chord symbols and right-hand melody.

3. Scales - prepare the following:

Prepare two octave major scales in all twelve major keys, up to 5 sharps and 5 flats, ascending and descending, with correct fingerings.

4. Schedule your audition

There are three audition dates for the Fall 2012 application process:

      • Friday, February 10, 2012
      • Friday, March 16, 2012
      • Friday, April 13, 2012

To schedule an audition time, please contact Irina Moreland at  Irina.Moreland@ucdenver.edu or (303) 514-2603.

While students are encouraged to perform "live" auditions, this is not always possible for out-of-state students.
