Lab Piano Placement and Proficiency Requirements Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Music Degree encompasses a variety of foundational classes in Performance Music, Music Business, and Recording Arts. Basic keyboard skills are fundamental to technical production and creative applications in the contemporary marketplace.

The Piano Lab experience provides a common instrumental foundation while providing students the tools to explore their own musical creativity and applications of related performance technology.

Piano placement in advance of summer registration is intended to allow students to register for the appropriate Piano Lab class in conjunction with Student Orientation, meetings with advisors, and in advance of attendance at CU Denver.

Depending on the degree program and major, Piano Lab requirements will vary from two to three semesters. The Faculty Coordinator Music Performance Piano Lab, will make recommendations, regarding specific requirements with students in greater detail when they begin advising and registration. Because these skills are so vital to each music program and because they will, in fact, facilitate a student's learning in other music courses and venues, it is highly recommended that students take these piano courses beginning in their first year of study as a music major.
