The Youth Leaders Study aims to identify factors that hinder or support youth who live in poverty in assuming roles of responsibility in their communities. Unlike leadership development initiatives by some international aid organizations, we are interested in the emergence of youth leaders from the bottom up. Information on the challenges these youth encounter and how they deal with them can provide useful insights to guide interventions and programs to enhance the capacity of these youth to improve the quality of life in the places where they live. The first phase of this study included 28 interviews, conducted by George Awuor, with young men and women in Nairobi slums.
