Streets of Hope

Images and Impressions by Homeless Youth Around the World

The Children, Youth and Environments Center for Research and Design at the University of Colorado Denver celebrated its long-awaited September launch with an exhibit of photographs designed to stimulate dialogue about how our society cares for its homeless children.

Depicting life on the streets, in foster homes, in shelters, and in shacks, the photographs were taken by 121 homeless children from 11 countries all over the world. The children participated in an international project that resulted in the book, Home/Life: 121 Kids from 11 Cities Photograph Their World, published in 2002 by the Homeless World Foundation.

The photos were displayed at the PlatteForum Arts Organization in lower downtown Denver from Sept. 3–24, 2004, before moving to the Marriott Courtyard in November and the Denver International Airport in December.

In conjunction with the exhibit, CYE organized a community forum on youth and family homeless. The forum brought together service providers, academics and homeless youth for a half-day discussion of the root causes and potential solutions of youth and family homelessness in the Denver area.
