Project Name: Learning Landscapes TAP Project

Title: DPS Learning Landscapes Technical Assistance Program

Funded by: Denver Public Schools Facilities Maintenance Project Timeline: 1/2006 - Ongoing

Project Overview: Learning Landscapes provides technical assistance to Denver Public Schools, neighborhood associations, community members, and related nonprofit organizations to improve school sites and surrounding neighborhoods, and to address relevant community issues through volunteer participation. Learning Landscapes also partners with Denver Public Schools to increase neighborhood stewardship and civic engagement through improving school grounds.

Project Aims:

  • Provide maintenance support and technical assistance to site based personnel.
  • Develop a sustainable maintenance plan for each Learning Landscape Schoolyard.
  • Assist with program development of curricular use of playgrounds. • Expand service-learning opportunities for the school/community through our partners.
  • Encourage each elementary school to form Learning Landscape Teams comprised of school staff, students and community members committed to sustaining the Learning Landscape schoolyard.
  • Promote program sustainability by developing site-specific resources for educators and community members on educational elements unique to each Learning Landscape Schoolyard.
  • Community Outreach:

  • Volunteer Events: Elementary students and surrounding community help to maintain and improve the existing Learning Landscape. Volunteer events help to increase a sense of ownership and civic pride.
  • School-based Learning Landscape Teams: Each school is asked to form a Learning Landscape team to help keep a watchful eye for vandalism and maintenance issues.
