Admission Checklist

Here is a helpful list of all of the requirements that you must meet in order to successfully apply to the College of Architecture and Planning:

1. Application

  1. Please complete the online application. You can find complete instructions and links to the online application on our Apply Now page.
  2. Make sure your full name, including former names under which materials pertinent to this application may be found, is on all application materials.
  3. Do not disregard any part of your previous record.
  4. Please note: you need a bank statement from you or your sponsor showing the amount of funds available for support. The sponsor’s bank must also certify that the sponsor has on deposit the amount of money applicant will need for tuition and expenses.
  5. If you have been awarded a scholarship from a private source or government agency, enclose the award letter.
  6. Photocopied documents are not accepted unless signed by the originator; signatures must be original.

2. Application Fee

  1. Submit the $75 non-refundable application fee, payable to the University of Colorado Denver.
  2. DO NOT SEND CASH.
  3. The application fee must be in U.S. funds only.

3. Academic Records

  1. Request two certified copies of “official” academic records from each college or university and/or professional school attended.
  2. These official academic records should include courses completed, grades or marks obtained, and certificates or degrees awarded.
  3. Transcripts must be mailed by the institution directly to the college.
  4. A certified literal English translation must also be submitted for documents that are not in English

4. English Language Proficiency

  1. Submit test scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Both are accepted as proof of English Language Proficiency.
  2. Your score reports must have been taken within the last two years.
  3. The UCD Institutional Code for TOEFL is 4875.
  4. CAP Minimum Requirements for International Graduate Applicants
    1. Computer Based TOEFL: 197
    2. IBT Based TOEFL: 79
    3. Paper Based TOEFL: 550
      The College will consider applications from students with strong academic credentials whose TOEFL scores are slightly below 550. If accepted, these students will be required to register for an English course when they arrive at the University of Colorado Denver. Note that an Official TOEFL Score Report is required; institutional TOEFL reports are not acceptable.
    4. IELTS: 6.5

5. Letters of Recommendation

  1. Three letters of recommendation from college or university professors. If you have been out of school for several years, we will also accept recommendations from your employer or supervisor.

6. Statement of Purpose Essay

  1. Applicants to all programs must submit a statement summarizing career objectives and reasons for pursuing the intended program of study.

7. Portfolio or Supporting Material

  1. If you are applying for Architecture and Landscape Architecture:
    1. Portfolio (6–12 bound pages, 8.5 × 11 inches - slides will not be accepted) that includes (but is not limited to):
      1. Essays
      2. Papers
      3. Photographs
      4. Photographic reproductions of artistic work such as sculptures
      5. Drawings
      6. Paintings
      7. Musical compositions
      8. Other fine arts
    2. A stamped, self-addressed envelope must be included for return of the portfolio
    3. You are also encouraged to submit Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores if your GPA is below 3.0. 
  2. If you are applying for Urban and Regional Planning:
    1. An 8.5 × 11-inch bound document that includes:
      1. Your statement of purpose
      2. Resume
      3. Copy of a student or professional paper or project

8. Graduate Record Exam (GRE)

  1. You are also encouraged to submit Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores if your GPA is below 3.0.
