Leadership Through a Third Eye

Maymester 2014

This course is an Ethnic Studies Course that will introduce students to both traditional and non-traditional leadership models. We will measure the impact these different models have on the citizens, resources, and the dissemination of services within Tanzania. This course will offer a multi-layered lens of leadership through the experience of American and Tanzanian leaders by exploring what factors influenced their leadership styles and decision making process.

Upon completion of this course, participants should have an understanding of the following:

  • Understand basic leadership styles
  • How to develop a personal and organizational mission statement
  • An introduction to Tanzanian cultures and how they impact governmental policies
  • Critical observation of local traditions with an emphasis on how communities address urgent needs with minimum resources
  • Compare Tanzanian current issues related to social justice to current issues in the United States
  • Analyze the intersectionality between class, ethnicity, gender, religion, and cultural affiliations
Program Highlights:
  • Hold a discussion at Uongozi Insitute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development
  • Volunteer at the Youth of United Nations Association Tanzania
  • Prepare to see a natural born leader, the “lion” on a game drive in Tarangire National Park
