International Residency Rotation educational experiences are defined as those educational experiences:
Not specifically required by ACGME program requirements; and
- Occurring outside the United States.
International Residency Rotation must be approved by:

Early and timely applications and preparation is essential to a successful experience
9 months in prior to departure:
Secure Program Director approval
Begin processing the Institutional Letter of Agreement for International Residency Rotation with the overseas host and the Program Director.
Verify that your passport will be valid more than 6 months beyond the conclusion of the international rotation and your anticipated date of departure from the host country. If not or it is close, get a new passport
6 months prior to departure:

Submit a completed Institutional Letter of Agreement for International Residency Rotation in the on-line application.
Obtain professional Travel Medicine Consultation for pre-travel vaccines, medications, and malaria prophylaxis (where appropriate). Pre-travel consultations, vaccinations and prophylactic medications are not covered by the CU GME Health/Dental Benefits Plan and are therefore the responsibility of the resident. The resident may elect to use any appropriate Travel Clinic. We recommend checking the CDC website (Click here).

One to Three Months Prior to Travel:
Secure travel arrangements.
Review the insurance and assistance information on the URM website International Travel link to determine whether additional insurance is indicated for your travel. https://www.cu.edu/risk/
Immediately Prior to Departure:
Notify Program Director of any Program Changes
Recheck State Department Travel Advisories and Warnings and with International SOS
Verify your emergency contact information in your on-line Application.
Organize all personal contact information both abroad and domestic, and share with Program Director, family/spouse/friend, and overseas program director.
- State Department Travel Information: Visit the State Department Travel Site for more information about international travel and travel to host country. www.travel.state.gov
- State Department Warning Appeal Process: Travel to countries on the Warning list is suspended, but may be appealed. Check here: If the country is on the Warning List, then an appeal must be completed, more information here.
- Schedule Participation in International Travel Workshop: These required sessions are conducted by the Office of Global Education at the AMC Campus. If attendance is not possible, contact John Sunnygard, Director, Global Education to set an appointment. John.firstname.lastname@example.org
- International Health and Evacuation Insurance. The University has negotiated a very good international health insurance policy through HTH Worldwidethat includes emergency medical evacuation. Additionally, it includes emergency evacuation assistance for extreme Political/Security situations and Natural Disasters. For people associated with the university on an education related program, the current fee for this insurance is $45.05 per 30 days (under 49 years of age).
- Emergency Assistance Provider.The University of Colorado Denver subscribes to International SOS, an international assistance provider. Their password secured website includes very valuable, country specific information about security, health, legal and travel issues. I SOS also will organize a wide range of international emergency services, many for a fee. International travelers are required to register with International SOS before leaving the country. The I SOS card and more information is available in the on-line Application.
- Emergency Contact information. Before departure, make note of local emergency numbers, US Embassy or local US Consulate, International SOS, and the host, etc. University Emergency contact information is here.
Program Director must confirm the following:
- Resident must be in good standing at the time of the request
- Resident must not be in the first year nor final 3 monthsof training
- Resident on track to complete all program/RRC requirements (i.e. case logs, educational time, etc) without extending the length of the residency due to international elective
- International residency rotation, including travel time, will not exceed two months per rotation
- Resident has taken no more than 2 international residency rotations during the entire residency
- International Residency rotation is in compliance with all program requirements, including Common Program Requirements and do not conflict with applicable Board eligibility requirements
- Granting of International residency rotation will not result in a failure to meet contractual resident staffing agreements with participating hospitals.
- Receipt of evaluation from International residency rotation Site Director who supervised the resident
- Resident produces either a written report or PowerPoint presentation on international residency rotation experience
