CU Denver offers three ways in which CU Denver faculty can Teach Abroad:
1. Lead a Global Study program. Proposal applications at the left. Please note, proposals must be approved by the Department Chair and College/School Dean. Only CU Denver faculty may submit proposals to teach abroad. Most programs take place during Maymester, summer or over winter break. Contact John Sunnygard, Director Global Education, John.Sunnygard@ucdenver.edu
2. Teach at International College Beijing. Please contact Khulan Dashpuntsag, Khulan.Dashpuntang@ucdenver.edu Hiring is conducted through the standard CU process, faculty must have the support of their Department Chair and Dean.
3. Mentor International Research, Internship, or Clinical – Many students engage in a variety of international research activities with faculty mentors.
OGE collaborates with colleges and schools to determine the most appropriate Global Study programs that meet curricular goals and requirements. Programs should retain the level of academic rigor expected on the Denver campus combined with the unique engagement opportunities of the overseas location. All proposals must have the support of the Department Chair and the Dean’s office. Courses may be undergraduate, graduate or both. Courses may also be cross-listed, but this must be done well in advance with the consent of the appropriate Department and College.
Faculty members are the most effective means of promoting a study abroad program. They bring enthusiasm, in-depth knowledge of the subject and location, and rich experience to students. OGE will help faculty members recruit by creating and printing brochures, maintaining a web presence, visiting classes, organizing a study abroad fair, and more. We strive to maintain the delicate balance between cost efficiency and instructional effectiveness. In general, but this can vary depending upon the location and focus of the program, minimum program size is 12 students. With more than one faculty member, up to 26 students may participate.
Faculty and staff members who lead Global Study courses must participate in one of the “Survivor: Travel Study Edition” workshops organized in conjunction with the Center for Faculty Development. These workshops include information on risk management, student intercultural growth, managing program logistics, insurance information, and more. With a combination of new program leaders and faculty members with years of experience, the sessions have real-life applicability and lively interactions. Additionally, each Spring we conduct a Behavioral and Mental Abroad workshop with the support of the university’s Counseling Center. Occasionally, OGE and OIA will organize workshops of interest to faculty and staff on subjects such as International Risk Management, Assessment in Study Abroad, etc.
We work hard to keep programs affordable to students while ensuring that faculty and staff leaders are fairly compensated for the exceptional amount of effort required to organize, teach and manage a program abroad. In some instances, the university will sub-contract the services of a reputable host abroad who will handle many details. In other instances, faculty members may be much more involved with the day-to-day management of payments and logistics. The Office of International Affairs Finance Coordinator is the interface between the faculty, overseas vendors, and university purchasing. The program supports the faculty salary, international and local travel, accommodation abroad, and, usually, a modest per diem. The program does not support any non-program related activities, personal travel, or support for family members.
Global Education offers a limited number of scholarships for students participating in University programs.
Before beginning the proposal process, we urge you to meet with the Director of Global Education to discuss your intentions, location, logistics, etc.. OGE uses an on-line proposal process derived from the student application process. Faculty members may apply on-line using the buttons to the left. You will need to create login information as your standard university login does not work with the StudioAbroad system. Once in the system, you may save as often as you like, cut and paste from existing documents, and upload documents. Please do not “submit” your proposal until you it is complete, as you cannot return to edit a “submitted” proposal. Contact the director for the detailed instructions on proposal requirements. |
