Scandinavian Sustainability Unlocked

Summer 2013

The Scandinavian Sustainability Unlocked program represents a rare and exciting opportunity to influence and participate in the design process in one of the most progressive parts of the world for integrating green infrastructures and renewable energies into the urban context. This Study Abroad includes traditional travel / study benefits for an education in Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Engineering and visits to some the most significant Scandinavian cultural places and sustainable buildings and sites.

Copenhagen has become the first Scandinavian city to adopt a policy that requires green roofs for all new buildings with roof slopes of less than 30 degrees. Copenhagen presently has 20,000 square meters of flat roofs. It is hoped that 5,000 square meters of new development each year will be covered with vegetation. This is part of Copenhagen’s effort to become “the world’s first carbon neutral capital by 2025.”

This program will focus on the integration of renewable technologies and living systems for architecture situated in sustainable sites. Rating systems such as: LID, Green Building, Sites (the new rating system for landscapes), and LEED will be used to facilitate cross-disciplinary discussions and help define, evaluate, and place intelligent buildings.
