F-1 Students
As an F-1 student, you are permitted to work on-campus while attending school. Employment must not exceed 20 hours a week while school is in session. During designated school breaks you are allowed to work up to 40 hours a week. You must report to ISS and get an on-campus work authorization form before starting work.
J-1 Students
As a J-1 student you may be allowed to work on campus as well. You must first determine if your visa sponsor will allow you to participate in on-campus employment You would only be allowed to work 20 hours a week while school is in session, and up to 40 hours a week when school is in session. Please see an International Student Advisor for more information.
Here are just some ideas for finding an on campus job
Work Clinic
ISSS offers Work Clinics several times a semester to provide F-1 students on information on Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and the application process for Optional Practical Training (OPT). Here is our current semester work clinic schedule:
| April 13, 2010 |
2:00 - 3:00 PM |
LSC, 9th floor conference room |
We ask that students attending the work clinic for CPT arrive a few minutes early.
ISSS also offers work clinics for J-1 student interested in Academic Training. We recommend making an appointment with an International Student Advisor to discuss this option in detail.
Tax Information
Taxes are due each April. All international students are responsible for filing a tax return each year, even if you have not had any employment.
J-1 students that are sponsored by a third party (Fulbright, AmidEast, AmericanCouncils, etc) should check with their sponsors regarding taxes.
