Maintaining Status

Overview

Requirements for both F-1 & J-1 students:

ISSS wants all F-1 and J-1 students to know how important it is to maintain your status while in the US.  Below are some requirements that apply to both F-1 and J-1 students.

U.S. Address:

All F and J students are required to report any changes in their physical Colorado mailing address.  If there is a change in your Colorado mailing address, you must update your address in the UCDenver Portal  within 10 days of the change.  If you have graduated and no longer have access to UCDenver Portal, but are doing OPT in the U.S. on UC-Denver’s I-20 please provide any address changes directly to an International Student Advisor.

Email Requirement:

All UC-Denver students need to activate their UC-Denver email account. Since email is the university official form of communication, it is important that you check your UC-Denver email several times a week.  You can expect to receive emails there from UC-Denver staff and faculty, including from professors, your department, the Registrar and the Bursar.  International Student and Scholar Services will also use this email to communicate important information to international students.  If you have difficulties activating your account, please contact an International Student Advisor.

Insurance:

Health insurance is mandatory.  F-1 and J-1 students are automatically enrolled in the UC Denver's International Student Health Insurance Plan.  If you have a comparable policy and wish to waive out of the UC Denver plan, please see visit the Student Health Insurance web site.

Program Extension:

A program extension may be granted by the school if the International Student Adviser certifies that the student has continually maintained status and that the delays are caused by compelling academic or medical reasons, such as changes of major or research topics, or unexpected research problems. Delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for program extension. Because of the required paperwork, students who need to apply for extension of stay should begin the application process no later than 30 days before the completion date on the I-20 or DS-2019.

Reinstatement to F-1 or J-1 Status:

If you are out of status make an appointment with your International Student Advisor immediately to learn about options for regaining F-1 or J-1 status.
