Overview
A January 3-14, 2011 China Study Tour for faculty to compare the dynamic growth of China’s two leading economic regions – the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta – and explore China’s transformation from a planned economy to a globally competitive market oriented economy. Faculty will meet with entrepreneurs, business executives, and government officials who make this growth happen and visit cultural sites, universities, and companies to develop a framework for the past and present. The program begins in Shanghai, China’s burgeoning economic and financial center with 25% of China’s exports and 12.5% of its financial revenues. Participants travel to Hangzhou where the GDP has increased an average of 22% annually. On to Guangzhou, a world class manufacturing center where 34% of China’s exports, 30% of its foreign direct investment, and 19% of its GDP occur on 0.5% of China’s land. Finally to Hong Kong, a world class service center that ranks among the most competitive regions on the globe.
