Program Requirements

You can complete this TESOL Certificate online as a non-degree seeking student, which means you only need to fill out the non-degree application. However, you must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent.

If you're a non-native speaker of English, you're required to submit an official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) report showing a score of at least 580. If you have a score below 580 but above 500 on the TOEFL, you may be admitted conditionally to the program. 

Required Courses:

ENGL 5171 – Language Theory
3 credit hours

This course introduces linguistic theory to the beginning graduate student. It also builds upon material included in the undergraduate class, by adding materials pertaining to the teaching of writing and graduate language studies.

ENGL 5601 – Principles and Practices of Second Language Acquisition
3 credit hours

This is an overview of basic principles in the learning and teaching of English as a second language. It is cross listed with ENGL 4601.

ENGL 5651 – Second Language Writing
3 credit hours

This course covers the following: the similarities between first and second language writing, the processes of composition and revision, teacher response to student writing, student processing of feedback, writing assessment and the reading and writing connection. It is cross listed with ENGL 5651.

Elective Coursework:

ENGL 5190 –Cross Cultural Communication
3 credit hours

This course explores the rhetorical use of language in its social context, demonstrating how it is an indispensable component of the world, and how we interpret it.
