CU Denver alum named Colorado Assistant Principal of the Year

12/10/2012
CU Denver alumnus Matthew Willis, assistant principal of William C. Hinkley High School in the Aurora Public School District, is the 2012-13 Colorado Assistant Principal of the Year. The announcement was made by the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE), which coordinated the selection process.

The news of his selection notes, “Willis is held in high regard as a passionate and results-focused educational leader. He is intent on helping to foster a school culture that maximizes student achievement, and he has worked to increase the professional learning for teachers to ensure that they have the necessary tools to help all kids learn.”

After completing the CU Denver program, Willis was hired by Aurora Public Schools as an assistant principal in the spring of 2009.

“Matthew was an awesome student and he deserves the recognition,” said Dorothy Garrison-Wade, PhD, associate professor, School of Education and Human Development.

About his studies at CU Denver, Willis has said, “I surely have used everything I learned at UCD.”

Willis was selected for this honor by his peers in a rigorous and competitive process facilitated by the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals (CASSP), a department of CASE and an affiliate of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The National Assistant Principal of the Year program is sponsored by NASSP and Virco Inc. As Colorado’s Assistant Principal of the Year, Willis is eligible for the National Assistant Principal of the Year award that will be given in spring 2013.
