Vu receives Google research grant

3/10/2014

Assistant Professor in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Tam Vu recently received a $54,887 award from Google.

The Google Research Awards are intended to support innovations in Engineering, Computer Science and other related areas. Out of the applicants for the award, Google selects those for which a partnership with Google will prove to be especially beneficial.

This award fosters the collaboration between Google and Mobile and the Networked System Lab in the CU Denver College of Engineering Department of Computer Science.

Vu's project, "One Ring to Rule Them All," aims to provide a singular method to protect and utilize identification and authentication. This method exploits the pervasive capacitive touchscreens found in today¹s personal electronic devices. Known as Capacitive Touchscreen Communication, it enables computers and mobile devices to identify a user by a unique 'token' such as a ring, watch, or other accessory custom to a single user.

The project focuses on personal tokens, such as credit cards, phone SIM cards, car keys, etc., into a single, custom accessory, by which a computer or mobile device can identify the individual user and grant access to this information.

More about previously awarded faculties can be found online.
