Anne Smatla has been named managing director for the 2012 Denver Silent Film Festival (DSFF) scheduled for Sept. 21-23 and presented by the College of Arts & Media (CAM). Smatla will work on the day-to-day operations of the festival, including management of marketing efforts and coordinating event logistics.
She is a CAM alumna and 2000 graduate of the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. She also earned a certificate in 2008 in film preservation from the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation at George Eastman House.
CAM Dean David Dynak said, “Anne had been very involved with the 2011 Denver Silent Film Festival and brings a unique set of skills and experience to the position of managing director. We are delighted to welcome her to the DSFF staff and are excited to have her as part of the team.”
Smatla’s prior film preservation experience includes more than five years at The Cinema Lab in Englewood, as well as serving as a volunteer to at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for updating the museum’s 16mm and 35mm film collection. Well-known in silent film circles, she was a recipient of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival Preservation Fellowship in 2008, and spent three weeks at Monaco Digital Film Labs restoring a 35mm nitrate film from the George Eastman House collection.
