fundamentalsof-healthcareimprovement.jpgThe second edition of Fundamentals of Health Care Improvement: A Guide to Improving Your Patients' Care has just been published by a group of authors including College of Nursing’s (CON) Amy J. Barton, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor, Daniel and Janet Mordecai Rural Health Nursing Endowed Chair, and associate dean for Clinical & Community Affairs and Wendy Madigosky, MD, MSPH, associate professor, School of Medicine, and director Foundations of Doctoring Curriculum. The book also is an invaluable resource for the tens of thousands engaged with the IHI Open School for Health Professions. In the forward to the new edition, IHI President and CEO Maureen Bisognano reflects on the events in her life that led her to a life-changing question: "How could I improve the systems of care to ensure safer, more effective care?"

To meet the needs of beginners in health care quality improvement, Fundamentals of Health Care Improvement will:

  • Explain the theory, principles, and methods of quality improvement
  • Provide opportunities for readers to apply quality improvement in a developmentally appropriate manner
  • Teach readers to analyze and measure systems of care and recommend system-level changes
  • Prepare readers to be advanced beginners in these domains so that they are ready to further develop these skills
