Summertime is perfect time for counseling connection

University of Colorado Denver Counseling Center provides low-cost, professional therapy sessions to community members

5/24/2012

DENVER - With summertime fast approaching, the Counseling Center at the University of Colorado Denver is reminding families that the summer months provide the perfect opportunity to grow and strengthen with the support of counseling. Speaking with counselors for help with school and family life shows a commitment to improvement. The Student and Community Counseling Center at the University of Colorado Denver provides one of the best values in Denver— low-cost, culturally-responsive, professional therapy to community members willing to take the important step.

Families wondering if counseling is something to consider should ask themselves:

  • Do you have a child who is exhibiting problematic performance in school, either academic or behavioral, or having a hard time with changing schools?
  • Is your family dealing with loss, serious illness, divorce, or potential deportation?
  • Do you want to feel more comfortable expressing who you are?
  • Would you like to gain additional skills to deal with family conflict, bullying, substance abuse, or stress?
  • Are you dealing with economic challenges?
  • Do you feel that you’d like to improve your parenting?
  • Are you being treated unjustly by others?
  • Have you ever felt like you don't fit in because of your body size, skin color, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious/spiritual beliefs, or something else?

If you can relate to any of these concerns, we encourage you to call the Counseling Center at 303-556-4372 to make an appointment or leave a confidential message.

“Our clinic opens its doors to families and children who would otherwise not have access to mental health care at all,” said Patricia Larsen, Psy.D., director of the Student and Community Counseling Center at University of Colorado Denver. “There are so many families who are uninsured or underinsured and can’t afford the high costs of essential mental health services.  Even the public hospitals and mental health centers refer to us because they are unable to handle everyone who needs services.  Often a family member will tell us, ‘I’ve called ten places in town already and you are the first people who have said “Yes, you can help us!’”

Cost for families in the Denver Public School is $5.  A reasonable, sliding-scale is available for all metro-Denver community members.

The Counseling Center is staffed by psychologists, professional psychotherapists and advanced graduate-level counseling students who assure clients respect and confidentiality. The Center is located in downtown Denver on the Auraria Campus (across from the Pepsi Center on Speer Blvd.) in the North Classroom Building, Room, 1200 Larimer, Room 4036. It’s part of the School of Education & Human Development, which is committed to developing excellent educators and counselors who inspire and engage in the community. Faculty, students and alumni have the research knowledge, innovation and cultural competence needed to stimulate growth and achievement in urban and diverse populations.
