Research Program Receives Accreditation

AURORA, Colo. (June 16, 2009) – Patients who participate in research trials conducted by the University of Colorado Denver have a new way of validating the program’s commitment to excellence. The University of Colorado Denver is one of the thirteen new organizations that earned accreditation from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP).

“The Colorado Multiple Institutional Review Board is an integral component of the human research protection program. It took a lot of hard work, but it is great to have our program validated by our peers.” said Alison Lakin, Ph.D, director of UC Denver’s COMIRB.

UC Denver’s human research protection program fosters a research environment that promotes the respect for the rights and welfare of individuals recruited for, or participating in, research conducted by or under the auspices of UC Denver.  The COMIRB is a key component of the human subject protection program. Members of COMIRB work to ensure compliance with all UC Denver policies as well as all federal, state, and local laws and regulations. In order to achieve this accreditation, the organization must demonstrate that its research programs have built extensive safeguards into every level of operation and that they adhere to the highest standards for research.

“This is a very important aspect of our human research programs here at UC Denver and it is important that we gained accreditation by our peers.  This helps to assure that our human subjects, volunteers and patients are treated with the highest standards for research and with highest safety standards for their health and welfare,” says Richard J. Traystman, PhD,
UC Denver Vice Chancellor for Research.

The COMIRB oversees more than 3,300 research studies and works with research subjects at The University of Colorado Denver; the Colorado Prevention Center; the Denver Health Medical Center; the Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center; The Children's Hospital, and the University of Colorado Hospital.

AAHRPP is a nonprofit organization that works with Organizations that conduct human research to raise the level of protection for research participants. The accreditation program utilizes a voluntary, peer-driven educational model. AAHRPP’s standards exceed federal regulations by requiring organizations to address conflict of interest, to provide community outreach and education and to apply the same stringent protections to all research involving human participants. (Under federal regulations, such protections are mandated only for federally sponsored or regulated research.) The accreditation process typically results in system-wide improvements that enhance protections for research participants and promote high-quality research.   For more on the other new accredited organizations visit www.aahrpp.org online.
