DENVER - The National Veterans' Training Institute is about a lot more than job training skills for veterans.

That is the message being conveyed to national attendees of the NVTI Training Solutions Symposium today and Thursday at the Doubletree Hotel near Stapleton. The NVTI's umbrella organization was recently rebranded as NVTI Training Solutions to reflect the center's full scope of training programs, including many non-veteran-specific courses.

NVTI Training Solutions is a center administered by the University of Colorado Denver and has distinguished itself as a premier training provider. State agencies under the Employment & Training Administration look to NVTI to provide training in staff development, case management, job search assistance and veteran-specific issues.

"We've branched out from pure veteran training to other people who work in the employment services area," said Steve Chapman, a consultant to NVTI Training Solutions after serving for 17 years as director.

The symposium is an opportunity to market NVTI Training Solutions' 23 training courses to employment services representatives nationwide. Seventy-nine representatives from 48 states are attending the conference.

"Our mission is about veterans employment and job search assistance," said Vaune Shelbourn, NVTI Training Solutions director. But NVTI courses, such as job assistance training and staff development, go beyond veteran-specific areas. Conference attendees are sampling the courses in various breakout sessions.

"We are using the symposium to make sure that states who request our trainings get the full scope of what we do so, hopefully, they will request more training from us," Shelbourn said. As she told the group during this morning's introduction, "We want you to want our training. We want you to be excited about it."

NVTI Training Solutions, formerly known as The National Learning Center, was recently expanded and renamed to more accurately reflect the intent of the organization.

The symposium also serves as "our coming out party," Shelbourn said, focusing its identity under the NVTI acronym and new NVTI Training Solutions logo. The organization is in its 26th year.

"We wanted to identify with our rich history," she said.

In September 2011 NVTI received a five-year, $12.2 million award from the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Veterans Employment and Training. Outside of the health sciences, the grant is the largest federal contract at the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus.

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs predicts veteran student populations will triple over the next three years. This means there will be growing demand for the NVTI's training of service providers to help veterans gain employment and transition out of the military.
