Open House attracts prospective students

Annual event presents information and options

Open House, Fall 2011

DENVER - The pleasant weather on Oct. 16 provided a great backdrop for the University of Colorado Denver Open House. Prospective students came from across the Denver Metro area as well as from outlying communities to explore opportunities. Arches of black and gold balloons greeted the students and their family members at the Events Center on the Auraria Campus.

Hosted by the Admissions Office, Open House included presentations about financial aid, the application process and other helpful information.  Participants also took advantage of guided campus tours that included stops at the Tivoli, Auraria Library and Campus Village.

Inside the Events Center information tables were staffed by representatives from the schools and colleges, Student Life and a range of other Denver Campus-based student programs. The ever-popular College of Arts & Media tables again attracted lots of attention, as did the BA/BS-MD Program partnership between University of Colorado Denver's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine. But interest also was high throughout the room.

“Each time we host an Open House, we meet students and their parents who are really excited about the prospects ahead,” said Barb Edwards, assistant vice chancellor, Enrollment Management.

“This year we’ve been interested to see a fair number of students who are juniors and sophomores in high school,” said Larry Loften, director, Student Life, Community Standards and Wellness.

While some students who’ll graduate high school in May 2012 still are contemplating applying for admission next fall, others such as Alexi from Northglenn will begin her studies in January after graduating a semester early from high school. Her goal is to pursue business applications for the web. She’s already reserved her spot at Campus Village.

Wesley from Colorado Springs also is planning to make Campus Village his home away from home, and he and his parents came up for Open House from Colorado Springs. His plan is to pursue biology.

Nicki from Denver attended to get more information about the nursing program. She’ll be a first-year student next fall.

Sam from Arapahoe High School in Littleton knows he’ll pursue studies in the College of Arts & Media. In the past two years he’s attended several film camps offered through CAM.

Students also had an opportunity to gather information about commuting options and to pick up a hoodie or sweatshirt with the university’s logo. Staff from the Alumni Relations team also were on hand to greet and welcome students.
