Laura Argys Named Associate Dean for Research

DENVER (Feb. 19, 2009) - Laura Argys, professor of economics, has been named associate dean for research for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) at the University of Colorado Denver. Argys has been with UC Denver for more than 15 years and most recently served as chair of the Department of Economics. As a labor economist and policy analyst with a national research reputation, Argys has been principal investigator or co-principal investigator on more than $1 million dollars in external research grants. Much of her research has been conducted with support from the National Institutes of Health and the American Education Finance Association including work on child support policy and welfare reform, education policy, foster care, and adolescent substance use and risky behaviors. Her work has been influential in shaping policy at the state and national levels.
“Dr. Argys is wonderfully suited for the position,” said Daniel J. Howard, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UC Denver. “She is a respected figure in her field with a strong record of external funding. With her keen appreciation for scholarship in the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences, she understands the challenges faculty members in CLAS confront in balancing the research, teaching, and service obligations of their positions.”

Argys teaches classes ranging from Principles of Economics classes for freshmen to advanced data analysis classes for graduate students, and was recognized with a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Teaching Excellence Award. She has also served the campus as a faculty leader in areas of budget analysis, faculty governance and strategic planning.  Additionally, she has served as a member and chair of the Faculty Assembly Budget Priorities committee for over a decade, and more recently as co-chair of the Budget and Planning Committee in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
