Denver (Nov. 29, 2011) - The University of Colorado Denver appointed Evelinn Borrayo, PhD, to direct the Latino Research and Policy Center (LRPC) at the Colorado School of Public Health.  Borrayo’s appointment affirms the university’s commitment to academic-community collaboration as means to address the health disparities facing Colorado communities.

“I believe that the LRPC can serve as the vehicle to building a community of scholars whose research interests collectively impact and serve the Latino community,” states Borrayo. “We need to harness scholarship and research to collectively reduce health and education disparities impacting the Latino population in Colorado and across country.”

As director Borrayo will have the academic and research expertise of two CU campuses, the Denver Campus and Anschutz Medical Campus. From both she hopes to involve a greater number of university students and faculty in outreach and service to the Latino community.

“Evelinn’s appointment provides a wonderful opportunity to create collaborative programs between the university’s Denver Campus and the Anschutz Medical Campus that ultimately will serve to enhance the health and well being of the substantial Latino community of Denver and the State of Colorado,” states Judith Albino, PhD, Colorado School of Public Health Interim Dean. “She is a superb educator and health researcher, and I believe that she will bring outstanding leadership and new energy to the LRPC.”

Currently Borrayo is an associate professor of psychology within CU Denver’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She will retain her faculty appointment in addition to her new role as the LRPC director. Borrayo’s research expertise includes experience in health and clinical psychology, with a focus on the prevention, control, and treatment of cancer among medically underserved Latinos.
