DENVER - Business students, many of whom are about to enter the job market, listened intently during "Land Your Dream Job," an event recently hosted by the MBA Student Organization (MBASO).

CU Denver MBA and MS student lives are busy: the classes, the careers, the families, the rush hour traffic on Speer Boulevard and Interstate 25. Yet, since the MBASO began its regular end-of-semester speaker series in late 2011, an ever-increasing number of students are staying late on Friday evenings to listen, learn and network. Case in point, the "Dream Job" event was a sold-out program. Sue Wyman, director of CU Denver's Career Connections, and finance Professor Eric Reiner spoke to a captive audience of current students, alumni and faculty.

“Each one of us in the (MBASO) believes deeply in the vision and mission of CU Denver,” said Katie Looby, the organization’s president. “It is a both a privilege and a great honor to assist the university in enriching our collective experience of business and Denver.” Looby, who has been MBASO president for a year, is in her final semester as head of the group. Being a marketing expert, she was a major architect of expanding the MBASO’s service and networking footprint at CU Denver.

Wyman enthralled the students by showing the quick and easy tips to create an unwavering brand image of oneself in the digital world. She emphasized the "dos and don’ts" to land a dream job. Her seven-step roadmap to get hired gave the students more clarity on the intricacies of applying for a desired job. Wyman shared job-searching techniques and ways to find useful resources, and touched on her own experiences in the job market.

The finance expert, Professor Reiner, then delivered an entertaining and informative talk. His charming and witty presentation prepared the students, even the “not-interested-in-finance” students such as myself, to halt and ponder upon the future of our lives. “Start early and be aware of the government pension offset,” he said. His assertion that it's never too early to start saving for retirement registered with every student in the room.

The evening concluded with an informative question-and-answer session.

While classes provide students with a first-rate education, the volunteer-only MBASO provides after-hours events to create opportunities for collaboration and inspiration. Although Looby is ending her term, the legacy of such inspiring events is certain to continue with a new president on the board.
