CU welcomes health care journalists to Colorado

Anschutz campus tours of research, clinical facilities, part of national conference

3/26/2014

AURORA, Colo. - Some 70 health care journalists from around the country are expected Thursday at the Anschutz Medical Campus as part of a conference headquartered in Denver that will feature many speakers from the University of Colorado.

The Association of Health Care Journalists will hold its annual conference Thursday through Sunday at the Grand Hyatt, the first time the group has met in the Mountain West. As part of the program for about 600 participants, from bloggers to major-market newspaper reporters, journalists will visit the Anschutz campus.

Working together, CU, University of Colorado Hospital (UCH)and Children’s Hospital Colorado have put together a tour that includes the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center, a look at cancer research and treatment, the Altitude Research Center, UCH’s innovative Emergency Department, and the Down syndrome work being done at Children’s. Some will visit the Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority to learn about the business side of health care innovation. Others will see the interdisciplinary training facility knows as CAPE – the Center for Advancing Professional Excellence.

The rest of the conference program includes sessions in Denver featuring many speakers from CU and its hospital partners, including discussions on disaster preparedness, suicide prevention, marijuana, PTSD, patient safety and personalized medicine.

On several panels, two of the three speakers are from CU. On one panel, focusing on oral health disparities, all three are with the university.

On the conference website, participants can get advice from the Altitude Research Center on dealing with altitude sickness.

The five CU schools and colleges on the Anschutz campus and the CU administration are jointly hosting the event, along with the University of Colorado Hospital and Children’s Hospital Colorado.
