Health news communications platform debuts

Colorado’s plummeting immunization rates explored by new Solutions health policy website, electronic newsletter

12/1/2010

Denver- The cost of failing to vaccinate children for preventable diseases in Colorado topped $56 million in 2009. Taxpayers picked up $31 million of that tab, according to a story by Solutions staff writer Katie Kerwin McCrimmon.

Solutions, a new project of the Buechner Institute for Governance at the University of Colorado School of Public Affairs, is funded by the Colorado Health Foundation and the Piton Foundation. Designed to expand coverage of health policy issues across the Rocky Mountain region and to provide a platform for debate and discussion, the website, newsletter and blog are edited by Diane Carman, director of communications at the school. Katie Kerwin McCrimmon, an award-winning reporter from the Rocky Mountain News, is the Solutions staff writer.

“Exploring the right issue by the right people at the right time,” said former Gov. Richard D. Lamm of Solutions. Lamm, who was Colorado’s governor from 1975 to 1987, is the author of the 2004 book, “The Brave New World of Health Care.”

“The Buechner Institute is delighted to host and support Solutions, the new Colorado health care policy website that creates an amazing combination of great journalism about health policy, new Internet features for input and conversation, and scholarly perspectives from the University of Colorado,” said UC Denver School of Public Affairs Dean Paul Teske.

New editions of Solutions will be published on Wednesdays at www.healthpolicysolutions.org. The e-newsletter will be available free to subscribers who enroll on the site.

The University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs is working hard to lead the field of public service, solve the pressing social issues of our time and change communities for the better by participating in leading edge research and preparing the next generation of public and nonprofit professionals.
