Getting a ‘feel’ for college in the future

Middle school students welcomed to campus

DENVER - Sixth and seventh graders from the Denver Public School District’s (DPS) Henry World School were welcomed to CU Denver at the Auraria Campus on April 3.

The DPS Henry World School is the only school in Denver that is authorized to offer the distinguished International Baccalaureate (IB) education for all students in grades 6-8, as an IB World School.

It’s a little too early for these students to begin applying for college or taking admissions exams, but it’s not too early for them to get a feel for being on a college campus.

The CU Denver Office of Student Success and Asian American Student Services organizations welcomed the 47 young students to campus. The activities began with an ‘ice breaker exercise’ and welcome comments from Peggy Lore, assistant vice chancellor, Student Success and director, Asian American Student Services. “The purpose of the visit was to encourage students to start thinking about going to college,” Lore said.

Duy Tran, who helped to facilitate the activities told students, “We want you to have a great experience today and make college part of your future.”

To ‘fit in’ on campus, the young students donned CU T-shirts. They also got a guided tour of campus.
