Annual event draws steady flow

2012 Earth Day at Anschutz Medical Campus
AURORA, Colo. – This year’s focus for the Earth Day observance at the Anschutz Medical Campus was a reflection of overall healthy lifestyles.

Today’s activities were coordinated by the campus-based student group BRANCH (Bridging Research and Aurora Neighborhoods for Community Health) in cooperation with the university’s Sustainability Office in Facilities Management with support through the new Colorado Center for Health and Wellness.

Students, faculty and staff browsed, visited and enjoyed the great weather as vendors provided information. On hand were representatives from Shred It as well as recycling services for cell phones and other electronics.

One particularly popular table was where small plants and ‘flower bombs’ – clots of soil with different kinds of seeds embedded – were being offered to give gardeners an early start on the coming growing season. Small plants included jalapeno's, tomatoes, basil, bell peppers and ancho chiles. The flower bombs were so popular, members of BRANCH stepped in to quickly assemble more of them when the initial supply was depleted.

Individuals who snapped up the plants and flower bombs offered advice to one another – “You have to keep them inside until Mother’s Day,” and "Do I need a green thumb to keep them alive?!"
