DENVER - We know the TV stations provide confusing updates on campus snow closures. Their limited characters and automated systems don't always clearly express the decisions made by campus leadership. The goal is to have updated phone lines and web announcements out by 5 a.m.
One point of confusion, and some frustration today, was the decision to close one campus but keep the other one open. It's common for the Denver Campus to close while the Anschutz Medical Campus remains open. This is due to the fact that leadership at the three institutions, along with the Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC), is making the call for downtown. All four institutions agree on whatever the weather decision is.
Scenes from Friday's snow day on the Denver Campus and the Anschutz Medical Campus:
Leadership at the University of Colorado Denver is the sole decider of what happens at the Anschutz Medical Campus. Careful consideration is given to conditions and how well the crews can clear the snow and maintain the streets. Keep in mind that snow removal and snowfall amounts vary at the different locations and both are considered when deciding to close a campus or remain open.
While getting about may have been challenging, some folks braved the cold and snow. (see slideshow).
The Denver Campus was quiet today, with scant traffic and the occasional snow plow making its way up Lawrence Street. Signs on campus buildings told the story: "School is Closed - Snow Day."
The phone number to call for updates is 877-463-6070. For all information about the current alert, go to www.ucdenver.edu/alert. You can also sign up for RAVE alerts to come directly to your phone and email.
