DENVER - For 2013, the University of Colorado at Denver hosted 14 blood drives resulting in the collection of 1,022 units. Since each unit of blood can help up to three patients, those 1,022 units helped 3,066 patients. Those overall statistics earned CU Denver bragging rights as the year’s best performing education blood drive partner for Bonfils Blood Center.
The new year already is on track for continuing success. Despite cold, snowy weather, the most recent effort, over several days in January, netted 185 units of blood which in turn can help up to 555 patients.
Michelle Lowry, Bonfils Blood Center community donor representative noted, "We also had 78 first-time donors which is awesome and on Wednesday, when we were inside, we drew eight “double red” units. This is our new procedure for collecting two units of red blood cells. Giving two units allows donors to double their impact by making more blood available to physicians and helping even more patients in need of blood transfusions. We will be bringing along the machine that does this procedure to all of our inside campus drives this year.”
The effort has been coordinated for CU Denver by Student Health Insurance Coordinator Susanne Lederer.
"It is because of your commitment as a liaison and University of Colorado at Denver’s support that Bonfils Blood Center is able to fulfill its mission of saving and enhancing lives through transfusion medicine," said Tiffany Burnett, director of Business Development for the Bonfils Blood Center.
