Business School students collaborate on assignment

DENVER - As most students and their families get ready to celebrate the holiday season, there are young adults in our communities who are homeless.

One group of students at the University of Colorado Denver Business School recently collaborated to make blankets for homeless youth who are served by the Denver area nonprofit Urban Peak.

First-year Business School students enrolled in the course "Business, Leadership and You" were assigned the task of deciding how to spend funds allocated for helping to build relationships and enrich students' lives.

The CU Denver students had two requirements: they had to reach a consensus on how to use the funds, and everyone in the class had to participate in the activity. The students tossed around many fun alternatives for the funds, such as going bowling or buying a meal for the class, but ultimately landed on a more altruistic option.

CU Denver Business School studentsTogether, they decided to use the money to buy colorful and cozy supplies for making blankets for those less fortunate than themselves. The university students are hopeful that their decision will help motivate others and to spread some holiday cheer and warmth.

Associate Professor Ken Bettenhausen, PhD, who teaches the course believes the project provided a valuable learning experience for the students. "It was a great experience for the students to be able to organize themselves and connect in a meaningful way with an organization that serves a population to which they can relate," Bettenhausen said.

The class hooked up with Urban Peak through the CU Denver Experiential Learning Center (ELC). Experiential learning includes a variety of activities with one common goal —to immerse students in hands-on learning outside the classroom where the experience is at the heart of the learning process.
