Second-floor project scores professional praise

CU Denver building space reimagined for College of Architecture and Planning

10/21/2013
The CAP second floor renovation is celebrated with a ribbon cutting and grand opening
DENVER - Renovation of the second floor in the CU Denver building at 1250 14th St. opened a new space for the College of Architecture and Planning where a recent ribbon cutting unveiled the new look. The dramatic design results have been recognized with two significant professional awards.

The second floor previously provided an often-used conference room and office space for Business School faculty who relocated to the new facility at 1475 Lawrence St.

The professional American Institute of Architect (AIA) Denver and AIA Colorado has recognized the work done by the architecture firm RNL.

"The college's faculty, staff and students worked closely with RNL to conceive of a special identity for the new space," Dean Mark Gelernter said. "The design uses open planning and simple industrial materials like plywood and steel, to create a loft-like character typical of adaptive re-uses in LoDo. This design boldly expresses our distinctive identity as an urban design school in the heart of a great city."

The AIA chapters recognize outstanding work annually. Honor awards are the highest achievement, followed by merit, then citation.

The project received a Merit Award for Interior Architecture at the AIA Denver 2013 Design and Honor Awards on Sept. 27 at the History Colorado Center. Twelve architectural design awards were selected from 86 entries submitted by members of AIA Denver. Here's the electronic magazine highlighting all submittals.

A Citation Award was given for Interior Architecture during  the AIA Colorado 2013 Design and Honor Awards on Oct. 11, during a presentation at Keystone Resort and Conference Center in Keystone. Ten architectural design awards were selected from 124 entries submitted by members of AIA Colorado. Read more on the AIA Colorado website.

Also at the AIA Colorado Awards, alumnus David Tryba (ENVD ’77, MArch ’81), founding principal of Tryba Architects, was named Architect of the Year. This award recognizes the following fields of achievement: outstanding service to the profession of architecture in Colorado, outstanding service in the field of architectural education, outstanding achievement in the field of design or allied arts to the benefit of the profession of architecture, outstanding public service to the people of Colorado and outstanding service to the building industry of Colorado.
