DENVER – CU Denver alumni, administrators and well wishers turned out in cowboy boots and western wear on Feb. 17 for this year’s Rock Bottom Ruckus, and they raised $40,000 for student scholarships.
Each year, the CU Denver Alumni Office partners with the Rock Bottom Brewery on Denver's 16th Street Mall for the festive fundraising event that was started more than 20 years ago. The restaurant closes the doors to the public for the evening's festivities and provides the appetizers, three course meal, wine and beer.
A range of donated items and services are showcased in a silent auction. Great finds on the auction block included certificates to local restaurants, trips and wines. Proceeds from the evening’s auction and dinner all go to fund student scholarships. Since the inception of the Rock Bottom Ruckus and other fundraisers, the Alumni Association has distributed a total of $1,200,000 in scholarships.
Current students who are alumni scholarship recipients served as the night’s “runners” to collect payment for the silent auction items. The Alumni Association awards $1,500 to part-time recipients, and $2,500 to full-time undergraduate students. Graduate students are awarded $3,000.
Alumni Relations Associate Director Julie Mullin said, “The Rock Bottom Ruckus is such a fun and lively event, and a chance for our alumni to meet, mingle and raise money for scholarships.”
The evening's donors included FirstBank at $10,000, which included a corporate table of 10. Public Service Credit Union provided a $500 gift certificate to the Broadmoor for the night’s drawing.
