A major function of the TMA will be to serve as an advocate for the transportation needs of the Anschutz Medical Campus community. Among its functions will be to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles on the campus every day. This will involve working with RTD and other local transit providers to improve routing and services and to promote vanpools and carpools, manage parking resources, promoting the use of bicycles and alternative forms of transportation. These functions will not only provide less congestion on the Anschutz Medical Campus, they will help to reduce carbon emissions associated with gasoline powered vehicles. Additional benefits will be a reduction in the amount of parking spaces required, more environmentally-friendly green space and a cleaner and healthier environment. A shuttle bus between the Denver Campus and the Anschutz Medical Campus provides a fast, reliable, and environmentally friendly way to commute between campuses. By taking the shuttle bus rather then driving your personal vehicle the amount of fuel consumed and the pollutants emitted into the air is drastically reduced. According to the National Safety Council, “One person using mass transit for an entire year, instead of driving to work, can keep an average of 9.1 pounds of hydrocarbons, 62.5 pounds of carbon monoxide, and 4.9 pounds of nitrogen oxides from being discharged into the air.”
The shuttles use on average 17,112 gallons of fuel per year commuting between campuses. This may seem like a lot of fuel at first but putting this in perspective, if there was not a shuttle available and everybody that currently takes the shuttles drove their own vehicles they would use an average of 74,136 gallons of fuel per year.
By having shuttle buses, that’s an average fuel savings of 57,024 gallons of fuel per year which is equivalent to 6 fully filled semi tanker trucks.
