Turnquist started his career designing structures for nuclear power plants and changed his path to engineering and facilities management at the University of Connecticut. From there he moved to Texas and became the director of facilities management at Baylor College of Medicine in the Texas Medical Center in Houston before coming to Colorado as the assistant vice chancellor for facilities operations. This department was recently consolidated with facilities projects, and renamed Facilities Management, with Turnquist as the associate vice chancellor.
