As I said two weeks ago when I addressed the state of the university, I am grateful for and inspired by how much you, our faculty and staff, give to this university and to the greater community.

 

I hope you will consider building on this sense of giving by participating in CU in the Community, which we are launching today. Formerly known as the Giving Back Campaign, CU in the Community allows you to take a half-day of work time to volunteer with the group of your choice.

 

The program is now in its fourth year, and one indicator of its success is the fact that each year brings an increase in number of participants, hours of volunteer work and benefits to the organizations with which we partner.

 

This year’s highlighted partner is Habitat for Humanity, a homeownership program that builds and sells homes to families in need of decent and affordable housing. The campaign will run through February and includes faculty, staff, students and alumni.

 

My administrative colleagues and I will be volunteering together at a Habitat build site. You are welcome to join us in serving Habitat for Humanity or to select another organization that resonates with your priorities. Either way, I highly encourage departments to serve together in a group activity. It can be a fun way to bring your colleagues together outside the normal work setting—and have a great time—while contributing to the university’s mission of improving the health and well-being of Colorado and the world.
